Hiking Lions Head in Cape Town

Lions Head, the best free hike in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa is situated in the shadow of three major geographic formations and upon arrival you cant miss them. Table mountain, Lions Head and Signal Hill all tower above the city and can easily be visited. They are all within a 15 minutes of the CBD and once there can be explored on foot. Table mountain has the added benefit of the cableway which takes you up and down within minutes.

This post will provide you with all the information needed to hike one of the three: Lions head. The 5-6km hike is quite easy as the trail gradually slopes up and around the head. No experience is required, only a bit of fitness, bravery and a positive attitude. The later part of the hike is a bit more technical with a series of ladders and chains that need to be circumnavigated. The reward along the way is some of the best views on offer in Cape Town.

Getting there

  • Uber +/- R60 or US$4-5
  • MyCiti bus, the Kloof Nek stop is about 600m from the parking lot, about R20 or US$1-2
  • Private taxi
  • Hike up from the CBD, and additional 3-4km
  • Join a tour

What you’ll need for the hike

  • Hat, sunscreen & sunglasses
  • Comfortable shoes, I hike with cross trainers
  • Lots of water
  • Cellphone in case you need assistance. Take down the emergency contact no at the start of the trail
  • Camera to document this adventure
  • Backpack to keep everything in.
  • I usually add a light jacket, weather in Cape Town can be quite random at times.

Where do we start?

There is a parking lot at the bottom/start of the trail. You can park all the way up and down the road on the city side. The parking lot is clearly marked and there is red pop-up coffee shop.

Costs?

The best part is that this hike is absolutely FREE!!!

Best time to hike?

In general, you should always check the weather when doing outdoor activities in Cape Town. The weather can be quite random at times in the city.

Early mornings and late afternoon is good to avoid midday heat during the summer. More adventurous hikers go up pre-sunsrise or pre-sunset. This allows you to enjoy either sunrise or sunset from the top of Lions head. Which I could only imagine would be spectacular. Just note that this would involve some hiking in the dark.

That’s all the info you need to do one of the most spectacular and absolutely free hikes in Cape Town. Enjoy and have fun.
